A Connersville teen is the latest to etch their name in the distinguished annals of Fayette County Lilly Scholar.
The Fayette County Foundation, late Monday, announced local teen Sophia Atkinson as its 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, paving the way for Atkinson to have all four years of her college education at any Indiana college or university paid for through the four-year, full-tuition scholarship the honor brings.
Atkinson, who spent her freshmen and sophomore years at Connersville High School before transferring to The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities in Muncie, was selected out of 21 Fayette County students vying for the scholarship.
Those students were scored on their academic achievement, character, leadership and a personal essay, with six students then being chosen for in-person interviews with the FCF’s selection committee.
“On behalf of our selection committee and board, the Foundation is proud to have Sophia represent Fayette County as the 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar,” said Katherine Good, program officer for the FCF. “We continue to be inspired by the accomplishments and ambitions of our finalists.”
Atkinson, the daughter of Jay and Kristine Atkinson of Connersville, plans to attend the University of Notre Dame in South Bend and study environmental biology.
